Topography maps use elevation contour lines to show the shape of the Earth's surface. In this map, each line represents 20ft of elevation above sea level. Each 5th line or 100ft is slightly thicker and is labeled "100". The closer lines are together the steeper the climb is from one elevation to the other. Conversely the more distant lines are from one another, the more gradual the hill. Land adjacent to the ocean with no contour lines , like the majority of Back Cove , are at sea level. (this is because Back Cove has been filled in and expanded four times).Straight lines are typically man made. Each red plus symbol represents one mile of distance.
